Whining | Yourself Into a Corner? How Not to

Necessity is the mother of invention.  That best describes today’s winemakers' challenges and sings the praises of those who see challenges as “creative challenges”.

We can “wine” ourselves into a corner, complaining that:

  • Budgets are tight.

  • Consumers are looking for an experience, not just a sip.

  • Marketing teams are looking for ways to do more with less.

  • Today’s wine buyer wants the wine to be authentic, have character and a story!

Oh, my oh my!  But wait, we can pivot, find the opportunity! What does an old vine Zinfandel vineyard like ours offer a winery in today’s market?

  • Heritage with a story

  • Authentic old vine character

  • Commercially practical production

  • Options for different wine styles from one vineyard

  • Innovation versatility

Heritage + Old Vine Character + Modern Production

Our old vine Zinfandel vineyard in the Mokelumne River sub-AVA of the Lodi Appellation was originally planted in 1959. Three generations of one family cared for the vineyard.  The vines were trellised and interplanted in 1991 to adapt to modern-day production methods and extend production while retaining the authentic old vine character. Our vineyard is sustainably farmed under the Lodi Rules program with sandy loam soils, solar-powered irrigation, and a practical approach to stewardship focused on long-term vineyard health. We believe consumers increasingly respond to sustainability stories that feel genuine and connected to real farming decisions.

One Vineyard + Different Wine Styles

Early planning and partnering with us, as growers can result in:

·        Earlier picking for:

o   Brighter, lower-alcohol style of Zinfandel with fresh acidity and a more modern profile with an earlier picking.

o   Or a light rosé

·        Later harvesting:

o   Can deliver the richer texture and deeper fruit character many consumers still associate with classic California Zin.

o   Or a red blend or a reserve bottling.

From a winery perspective, that means multiple SKUs, multiple price points, and multiple seasonal offerings tied to one vineyard story.

Exploring Innovation? Versatility Matters.

Old vine Zinfandel also has unique value as a blending component. It can contribute spice, aromatics, texture, and energy to proprietary red blends or California appellation wines. A small experimental lot could become a tasting-room-exclusive carbonic wine, a chillable red, or a limited club release without the complexity of sourcing additional vineyards.

That flexibility may become increasingly important as wineries look for ways to:

  • Reduce sourcing complexity

  • Maximize vineyard storytelling

  • Improve production efficiency

  • Test new concepts with lower risk

  • Create broader consumer appeal from a single vineyard partnership

At the same time, authenticity still matters. Our vineyard has both.

As growers, we see our old vine Zinfandel not as a single finished product; we see it as a flexible foundation for creativity — capable of supporting traditional wines, modern styles, blends, rosés, and experimental programs from the same vineyard source.

One vineyard. Multiple possibilities.

And in today’s market, isn’t that what a winery and its winemaker needs?
